Portraits tends to take a lot more time due to the higher level of detail and precision used to create them. It is because of this they are usually more expensive but they are worth a little extra!

Characters are so important as a lot of love and time has been invested into creating there personality and aesthetic. When I make character sheets either for D&D attributes or character illustrations i always try to get as much information to ensure my portrayal is as accurate as possible.
